Nativity scene dedicated to Mary in St Peter's Square

Inspired by the life of Mary, the Mother of Christ and the Church, the Nativity scene was unveiled Christmas Eve in St. Peter's Square. This year it also depicts the Annunciation to Mary, left, and the encounter between Mary and Elizabeth, on the right.

Pope John Paul II, Pope of "Totus Tuus", inaugurated the Nativity which has been staged every year since 1982 by the Technical Services of the Governorate of Vatican City.

The opening ceremony was enlivened by a concert of Christmas songs entitled "The Chiarastella" offered by the Orchestra of the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, conducted by Ambrogio Sparagna. It was accompanied by 60 children, and by traditional instruments from Italy an ...
